What is Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana?


Under PMUY, the government provides domestic cooking gas (LPG) connections to households below the poverty line.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana, the central government has created a scheme to provide safe clean cooking fuel to all households in the country who still use old, unsafe and contaminated fuel for cooking. The Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana was announced by the Union Government on 1 May 2016. Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana, the Government of India is providing domestic cooking gas to the APL and BPL ration card holders of the country. The project is being implemented under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas of the Central Government.


Under the PMYU scheme, the central government is providing a financial assistance of Rs 1600 to all BPL and APL ration card holder families. Through the Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana 2020, the Government of India aims to provide LPG gas connections to all the poor APL and BPL families of the Central Government of the country. To apply under Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana, the age of the female beneficiary should be 18 years or above. Only then they can avail the benefits of this scheme.


Purpose of Ujwala Yojana: The main objective of PMUY Yojana is to promote clean LPG fuel in India leaving behind impure fuels and save the environment from pollution. Women from families below the poverty line have to collect firewood and light the stove to cook, the smoke of which deteriorates the health of women and children. The health of women and children is protected by the use of LPG gas available under the Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana. Government has decided to promote women empowerment through this scheme.

Under this scheme, the central government is benefiting women from lakhs of poor families in the country. As you know that the problem of corona virus epidemic is going on all over India, the Prime Minister first imposed a 21-day lockdown. It was later expanded further. Because of this the poor are facing problems to live their lives. Keeping this in mind our country’s finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has made a new announcement under this scheme. Under this Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana, free LPG cylinders were provided by the central government to the beneficiary women from poor families of the country for the next three months.

The government has started the first installment of free gas cylinder amount under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana from April 1. Only three LPG cylinders of 14.2 kg will be provided under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana.


Each beneficiary will be given one free cylinder per month. After the delivery of the first gas cylinder, the amount of the second installment goes into the customer’s account. Later the third installment will be given. There should be a gap of 15 days between two refills.


This scheme is only for below poverty line families. After updating, the government has covered 8 crore households in the financial year 2019-2020.


800 crore has been earmarked by the authority. To get free LPG connection, BPL families have to apply for this scheme.


Those who have already applied for this scheme will get free LPG till June 2020 due to lockdown.


The PMUY scheme is currently active and covers 715 districts of the country.

How to Apply in Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana?


Interested women who want to apply in Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana can download the application form from the official website. Then fill the information like Aadhaar card number, mobile number, name, address etc. asked in the application form. After attaching all your documents, go to your nearest gas agency and submit your application form. Your LPG gas connection will be issued within 10 to 15 days after submitting all the documents verified by the gas agency officer.


Overview


In the first year of launch, 22 million connections were delivered against a target of 15 million. As on 23 October 2017, 30 million contacts have been distributed, of which 44% have been given to families belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. By December 2018, this number had crossed 58 million.


In the 2018 Union Budget of India, its coverage was expanded to include 80 million poor households. Oil Marketing Companies (OMC) have conducted 21,000 awareness camps. This scheme led to a 56% increase in LPG consumption in 2019 compared to 2014.


The highly popular scheme has benefited 14.6 million BPL households in Uttar Pradesh, 8.8 million in West Bengal, 8.5 million in Bihar, 7.1 million in Madhya Pradesh and 6.3 million in Rajasthan.


In the Union Budget 2021-2022, the government announced that 1 crore more connections will be provided under this scheme.


At the 107th Indian Science Congress in Bengaluru in January 2020, Narendra Modi announced that the technology had helped India “identify the 8 crore [80 million] women who still use coal or wood for cooking” and “helped us understand how new”. Distribution centers should be built with the help of technology.


National Family Health Surveys demonstrate significant improvement in access to clean cooking fuels due to PMUY. After 2015, the annual increase in access to clean energy increased exponentially. It has increased exponentially from 0.8% in rural areas to nearly sevenfold to 5.6% after 2015.


A major achievement of Ujwala Yojana is making Himachal Pradesh India’s first smoke free state.
